Terry Smith
As several kinds of authoritarianism sweep into power in many parts of the world, not least here in the United States, it is timely to ask which artistic tactics might become resistant strategies in such situations. Departing from the confrontational approach of Ai Weiwei in several of his works and actions, I will concentrate on the immersive engagement pictured in Wang Tuo’s The Interrogation (2017) and The Second Interrogation (2022-23); and the contrasting of world pictures in Archie Moore’s installation kith and kin (Australian Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2024).
Terry is Andrew W Mellon Emeritus Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory, University of Pittsburgh; Emeritus Professor of Art History, University of Sydney; Professor at Large, The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, Sharjah; Professor in the Division of Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought at the European Graduate School, Saas-Fee; and Faculty at Large, Curatorial Practice Program, School of Visual Arts, New York. He will be Slade Professor of Fine Arts, University of Cambridge, 2025-2026.
