Diana Flatto will defend "Figuring Gender in Antifascist Visual Culture between Argentina and Uruguay, 1935-1949." This dissertation traces the role of women artists and feminized figures in the common visual language developed by several groups that confronted growing threats of fascism with cultural activities: the Agrupación de Intelectuales, Artistas, Periodistas e Escritores (Association of Intellectuals, Artists, Journalists, and Writers, hereafter AIAPE) in both Buenos Aires and Montevideo; the Junta de la Victoria (Victory Board, JV) in Buenos Aires and its sister organization Acción Femenina por la Victoria (Feminine Action for Victory, AFV) in Montevideo; and the Sociedad Hebraica Argentina (Argentine Hebrew Society, SHA) in Buenos Aires.
