Andrea Maxwell (PhD 2022) presented her paper, “Lorenzo Lotto and the (Im)Permissibility of Divine Images” at the Renaissance Society of America’s Virtual 2022 Conference in a panel on “Italian Renaissance Altarpieces.” She also won a registration award to make this presentation possible. Her research resituates one of Lotto’s innovative altarpieces within the context of the Italian Wars and Protestant Reformation, and she demonstrates how this work made a visual argument for the permissibility of divine images by merging Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant rhetoric into one devotional, Christological painting.
