On March 21, Christopher Nygren presented his paper “Salt, Water, and Stone: The Ecology of Art in Renaissance Venice,” at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The paper traces the history of painting on stone in Venice within the ecology of the broader Veneto region. These episodes of painting on stone in Renaissance Venice shed light on the ecology of art in the lagoon city and can provide a method for studying the ecology of early modern art more broadly.
