Christopher Nygren presented his paper “Between Stone and Blood: Painting on Obsidian in the Trans-Atlantic World,” at a virtual symposium hosted by the Saint Louis Art Museum. Nygren’s paper, now available as an online video, explores the materiality of obsidian and the ways artists incorporated the stone’s natural features as dramatic backdrops for painting in the early modern period. This symposium was held in conjunction with the exhibition “Paintings on Stone: Science and the Sacred, 1530-1800”. To watch Nygren’s presentation, visit YouTube.
