Margaret Barnes, an undergraduate senior in the History of Art department, presented her paper "Reinventing Motherhood: Intimacy and Authority in Madonna of the Svezzamento," at the 2nd International Women in the Arts Conference held in Rome, Italy from October 19-21st. Organized by renowned art historians Dr. Consuello Lollobrigida and Dr. Adelina Modesti, the conference was interdisciplinary, and included major attendees and keynote speakers. Barnes’ paper explores the painting "The Madonna of the Svezzamento," a painting with a contentious attribution history, and follows its attribution by Dr. Gianni Papi to Artemisia Gentileschi, examining the painting through its interpretation of the humanity of Jesus through his submission to his mother Mary. The link to Barnes’ talk is available through the recorded Day 2 video on the Annual International Women in the Art Conference website.
