It was somehow appropriate that I first met Fil in Paris, back in our student days, so that when it came time for a move to Pittsburgh, between him and John Williams whom I had met in León on the Pilgrim's Route, there were friends waiting to welcome us and to offer congenial and collegial interaction over the years. Fil's work in architecture and sculpture in England and France, resulted in important publications and his guidance of hands-on experience with Semester at Sea were highpoints for his Pitt students. At home he was a key player in the Architectural Studies program which he master-minded with colleague Frank Toker that offered specialized opportunities for Art History majors. Not least was his culinary side-line, as food critic in the Post-Gazette for many years, and memorably with his wife Jana in their elegant Pittsburgh home where dinner invitations were compelling and delectable. Memorable too was our last meal together in Paris just after his retirement, at Le Relais de l'Entrecôte, steak in red-plush surroundings. We remember him fondly.
