Graduate student Kathryn Carney was recently awarded a German Studies Research Grant by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to conduct research at the Bundesarchiv film archives in Berlin this coming summer. The grant will support Carney's work on popular scientific and medical films shown at the 1926 German national hygiene exhibition known as "Gesolei," one of the largest and most significant exhibitions of the Weimar Republic. This research will lay the foundations for a chapter of Carney's dissertation project, which focuses on representations of the body at such hygiene exhibitions as they relate to questions of German ethno-nationalism leading up to the Third Reich.
