P Polk and Deirdre Smith
For the Spring 2025 Identity & Identification Constellations event, Hot Metal Bridge Fellow P Polk and Teaching Assistant Professor Deirdre Smith are organizing a screening and discussion exploring the intersections of identity and power through video works made by artists living in the United States in the late 1980s. The evening's program will focus on the strategies of artists—including parodic embodiment, personal storytelling, poetry, and music—to counter ideological narratives, pressure to conform, and experiences of marginalization and oppression. The ensuing discussion will engage the parallels between the moment under examination and the present, and what still and no longer resonates about the ways artists responded, and were in turn responded to. The screening will feature work and performances by: Shu Lea Cheang, Marlon Riggs, Michael Smith, and David Wojnarowicz.
