Roberts Presents at Society of Cinema and Media Studies

Graduate student Emma Roberts presented her paper, "Smoothing Off the Rough Corners: In the Company of Men (1969) and the Interracial Encounter” at the Society for Cinema & Media Studies Annual Conference. Focusing on In the Company of Men, a training film commissioned by Newsweek Magazine and directed by William Greaves, she examined the film’s circulation beyond the workplace contexts it depicted, reaching audiences through television broadcasts, film festivals, and local screenings. She presented the film as a primary document of the sensitivity training movement, discussing its depiction of psychodramatic encounter as a means of managing social—specifically racial—difference and how it constructed an illusory image of "mutual orientation."
