HAA graduate student Sara Sumpter is the 2012 Chino Kaori Memorial Essay Prize for her paper "Visualizing the Invisible: Supernatural Sight and Power in Early-Medieval Japanese Handscrolls".
Established in 2003, the Chino Kaori Memorial Essay Prize is administered by the Japan Art History Forum (JAHF) and sponsored by the University of Hawaii Press. This annual competition is open to graduate students from any university. The prize will be awarded to the best research paper written in English on a Japanese Art History topic.
